The Nike Alphafly 4 is the lightest and most responsive Alphafly yet, with 10 per cent more energy return and 5 per cent reduction in weight.
The shoe remains aimed squarely at marathon racing, from elite athletes chasing podiums to everyday runners trying to lower their personal bests. The bigger change is philosophical: Nike is trying to make the Alphafly’s speed easier to access and, crucially, easier to hold onto.
The fourth generation keeps the familiar ingredients, such as ZoomX foam, a carbon-fibre Flyplate and twin forefoot Air Zoom units, but almost every major component has been reworked.
One of the biggest changes is the introduction of ZoomX LT foam. Nike says the new compound is up to 17 per cent lighter than conventional ZoomX while returning 8 per cent more energy. It is also designed to feel softer and more cushioned.
Rather than replacing standard ZoomX completely, Nike layers the two foams above and below the carbon Flyplate. That creates a complete cushioning system intended specifically for long-distance racing, balancing weight, rebound and protection rather than simply making the shoe as firm and aggressive as possible.
A full-length carbon-fibre Flyplate continues to sit at the centre of the shoe. Its familiar scooped geometry works with the surrounding foam to create a rolling sensation through each stride, helping the runner maintain forward momentum and cadence.
The plate also provides stability, which is increasingly important as fatigue begins to affect foot placement and running mechanics. This is where the Alphafly differs from simply adding more cushioning.
The two visible Air Zoom units beneath the forefoot remain. Nike says they have been retuned to work more smoothly with the new foam and Flyplate, providing race-day propulsion without dominating the feel of the shoe.
The Alphafly 4 also receives a new Atomknit upper. It uses a fully seamless, breathable construction with zoned cables around the midfoot, an integrated heel unit and a moulded sockliner to keep the foot secure.
Underneath, Nike introduces a new lightweight Fast Shot outsole. Its purpose is straightforward: provide enough traction and grip for race conditions without adding unnecessary mass.
Nike says the Alphafly 4 was shaped by feedback collected over several generations, including work from Project Dreamweaver, extensive women’s testing and input from runners across different abilities and intensities. That wider development base helps explain Nike’s repeated emphasis on making Alphafly speed accessible to more runners.
Availability
The Nike Alphafly 4 received an early limited release on 17 September through Nike’s website. Broader availability begins on 29 October through Nike and selected retailers.
