Sony has just taken the wraps off the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II.
This second-generation model blends high resolution with stunning bokeh, all while delivering fast, precise autofocus in a remarkably compact body. Whether you’re capturing portraits, weddings, travel scenes, or cinematic video, this lens is set to become your new go-to.
Sony has packed this lens with two XA (extreme aspherical) and two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements, ensuring that chromatic aberrations are effectively suppressed. Sharp, corner-to-corner resolution guaranteed.
Sony’s original Nano AR Coating II technology is also deployed to tackle flare and ghosting, giving you crystal-clear images, even in challenging lighting.
The 11-blade circular aperture, combined with careful optimization of spherical aberration during both design and manufacturing, delivers the kind of soft, creamy bokeh that has become the hallmark of Sony’s G Master series.
Its autofocus is not only fast but incredibly precise and whisper-quiet, perfect for those moments when you need to capture the action without distraction. In fact, it’s up to three times faster than its predecessor.
And if you’re tracking moving subjects, you’ll find the subject tracking performance has seen a dramatic improvement of up to seven times.
One of the most remarkable things about the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II is how Sony has managed to pack so much into such a lightweight package. Weighing in at just 642 grams, this lens is approximately 20% lighter and 13% smaller in volume compared to the original 85mm F1.4 GM.
For filmmakers, the lens is equipped with an XD linear motor for smooth focus transitions, and focus breathing is kept to a minimum, with in-body focus breathing compensation supported.
The lens also features two customisable focus hold buttons, an AF/MF switch for quick changes, and an independent aperture ring. Add in Linear Response MF focus control, and you have the intuitive, responsive control that creative shooting demands.
Sony knows that the real world isn’t always kind to your gear, which is why they’ve made sure the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II is built to last. The front lens element is coated with fluorine, making it easy to clean off fingerprints, dust, and other contaminants.
