Flo Energy Launches Plantable Red Packets.

Flo Energy is giving the age-old tradition of giving red packets an eco-friendly twist with their new plantable red packets.

Introducing plantable red packets, a first-of-its-kind initiative in Singapore that lets you turn prosperity into something truly tangible – vegetables.

Flo’s latest creation is a biodegradable, seed-infused red packet designed to be planted. Adorned with delicate mandarin oranges and leafy motifs that hint at its green potential, the red packet can be buried in a pot. Give it some TLC, and watch as it transforms into fresh, homegrown vegetables.

Each packet is made from 100% recycled paper, with seeds seamlessly embedded into the fibres. And because no New Year’s ang bao would be complete without heartfelt blessings, Flo has printed three timeless Lunar New Year greetings on the front.

On the back, a QR code provides planting instructions, making it easy for anyone to cultivate their own little patch of prosperity.

The idea of a sustainable ang bao might seem novel, but when you look at the numbers, it’s clear why this change matters. According to Hong Kong environmental group Greeners Action, more than 320 million red packets are distributed annually, requiring a staggering 16,300 trees to be cut down.

That’s a whole forest disappearing every year, just for a tradition that lasts a few moments.

“At Flo, we actively reduce paper waste wherever possible, so we wanted to reimagine the Lunar New Year tradition in a way that aligns with our sustainability mission,” said Ernst Westendorp, Flo’s Chief Commercial Officer.

“What if red packets didn’t just get reused, but actually renewed themselves into something useful for our customers?” And that’s exactly what Flo has done.

Instead of red packets being single-use waste, they now become living, breathing symbols of growth and renewal. And with Singapore actively pushing for more eco-conscious living, these plantable red packets align perfectly with the city’s sustainability goals.

So, as you exchange blessings and good fortune this festive season, why not take the extra step and give a gift that keeps on giving? With Flo’s plantable red packets, your Lunar New Year tradition can sprout into something truly meaningful.
