Canon has launched the EOS R8 Mark II, a new 24.2-megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera that takes the lightweight formula of the original EOS R8 and adds features previously associated with more advanced models in the EOS R system.
The first EOS R8 was appealing because it put a full-frame sensor into a small and approachable body. The R8 Mark II keeps that idea, but gives users more room to work handheld in low light, shoot slower shutter speeds and record smoother video without immediately reaching for a tripod or gimbal.
At approximately 546g including battery and memory card, Canon says it is its smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera with In-Body IS. It uses a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor paired with Canon’s DIGIC X processor.
The biggest change is arguably on the outside. The new body adopts a more contemporary interpretation of the company’s traditional pentaprism silhouette, combining straighter lines with softer curves. More importantly, the R8 Mark II gains a multi-controller joystick for autofocus selection, a control normally found on higher-end EOS R models.
Autofocus comes through Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system, with deep-learning-based subject tracking. The camera can shoot at up to 40 frames per second using its electronic shutter, while Pre-Continuous Shooting allows the camera to capture images from just before the shutter button is fully pressed.
Canon is also leaning harder into in-camera creativity. The EOS R8 Mark II introduces two new photo and video Colour Filters called NegativeFilmtone and PositiveFilmtone, joining 14 existing filters. Users can adjust their strength directly in-camera.
Handheld Night Scene Mode also gains four additional colour options: Blue, Black & Orange, Pink and Green.
The new Creative AUTO mode goes further, offering an easier interface for people still learning how exposure, depth of field and visual style work. Canon says this is the first time Creative AUTO has appeared on an EOS full-frame camera.
The Background Blur Creative Assist feature also expands into movie mode, allowing users to create more pronounced defocus effects through a simplified interface rather than manually juggling aperture settings.
The EOS R8 Mark II records 6K-oversampled 4K video at up to 60p and Full HD at up to 180p with audio. Canon Log 3 is included for users who want greater flexibility in colour grading, while Custom Picture controls from the Cinema EOS range bring support for Custom LUTs and more advanced picture adjustments.
The camera supports Canon’s full-frame and APS-C VR lenses, including the RF5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye, RF-S3.9mm f/3.5 STM Dual Fisheye and RF-S7.8mm f/4 STM Dual.
A new VR Clear Mode is designed to improve contrast and clarity when footage is viewed through VR goggles, potentially reducing the amount of post-processing required. Still photographs can also be converted into 3D through Canon’s new Dual Pixel 3D Converter software, which uses distance information obtained from the camera’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF system.
The camera uses a single SD card slot with support for UHS-I and UHS-II media. Crucially, the compartment is now seperated from where the battery sits.
Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3, while UAC/UVC support allows 4K 30/60fps or Full HD 30/60fps output for compatible streaming and conferencing setups. There is a 3.5mm microphone input, HDMI Type D output at up to 4K60 and USB power support. The body measures approximately 131.4 x 90.0 x 79.7mm and, as mentioned earlier, weighs around 546g with battery and card.
Canon has also announced three accessories alongside the camera: the Extension Grip EG-E2, Tripod Grip HG-1000TBR with Bluetooth Remote Controller BR-E2, and the updated Speedlite EL-5 Version 2, which increases wireless communication range to around 50m.
Pricing and availability in Singapore
The EOS R8 Mark II body will be priced at S$2,519 in Singapore.
A kit with the RF24-50mm IS STM lens will cost S$2,859. Both are expected to be available from October 2026.
The Extension Grip EG-E2 is priced at S$119, while the Speedlite EL-5 Version 2 costs S$469. The Tripod Grip HG-1000TBR is priced at S$149 and arrives earlier, in September 2026.
