Sony’s flagship true wireless earbuds, the Sony WF-1000XM6, return with sharper active noise cancelling, stronger battery performance than claimed, and a transparency mode that finally feels natural.
There are two types of noise in Singapore. The first is the obvious kind: MRT screech, bus engines, construction drills that seem to start precisely when you press “record” on your phone.
The second is more subtle: the constant, low-grade hum of modern life that follows you from office to café to home.
The Sony WF-1000XM6 takes a firm swing at both, and while it isn’t cheap, it’s the kind of upgrade you notice the moment the train doors shut.
Design and fit: familiar Sony, with a more serious approach to sealing

Sony’s WF line has always treated fit like a performance feature rather than an afterthought. The XM6 continues that philosophy, because with ANC earbuds, fit is not comfort. The seal you get dictates how much noise the microphones have to fight, and therefore how effective everything else becomes.
Sony has upgraded the ANC hardware significantly, with the XM6 now using eight microphones (up from six on the XM5). This larger mic array gives the earbuds more environmental data to work with when analysing outside noise.
Noise cancelling: genuinely top-tier, especially where it counts

Sony’s new Adaptive NC Optimiser tunes ANC performance in real time based on noise and fit. In our experience, it adapts quickly when moving between environments, although there were instances where manually toggling ambient mode caused the buds to “protest” and revert to ANC while the feature was enabled.
That behaviour isn’t a deal-breaker, but it is worth knowing: Sony is leaning heavily into automation, and sometimes automation has opinions of its own.
Transparency mode: finally natural, not plasticky

If noise cancelling is about escaping, transparency is about returning to the world without ripping your earbuds out like you’re exiting a burning building.
Thankfully, the XM6’s transparency mode is very effective, with voices coming through clearly and naturally, though slightly amplified.
That slight amplification can actually be helpful in the real world. When you’re ordering kopi, crossing roads, or catching an announcement, you want clarity more than pure realism.
Battery life: better than Sony claims

Battery anxiety is the enemy of premium earbuds. If you’re paying flagship prices, you want confidence.
While we did not manage to run the XM6 down to flatline, Sony’s own claim is 8 hours of continuous playback, more than enough for travelling duties. Charging options include USB-C and Qi wireless charging via the case.
And yes, Sony’s Quick Charge returns. Sony claims 3 minutes of charging for up to 60 minutes of playtime.
Sound quality: crowd-pleasing, with Sony’s familiar polish

This is where Sony shines, and they tend to tune its flagship earbuds for mass appeal, making them sound full, detailed, and slightly flattering rather than ruthlessly clinical.
The XM6 continues that approach. The overall presentation as strong and well-balanced, and while their deeper sound-quality analysis notes some quirks with ANC affecting bass balance, the general conclusion is that most listeners will find the XM6 “pretty decent” and broadly enjoyable.
These are earbuds designed to live in your pockets, not in a listening room. If you can make podcasts clear, vocals believable, and bass controlled on a train ride, you’re doing something right.
Verdict: the upgrade you feel immediately

The Sony WF-1000XM6 is Sony doing what it does best: taking an already strong flagship formula and tightening the screws where it matters most.
If you’re coming from older Sony generations, this is an easy recommendation. If you’re on the XM5, the jump is worth it only if you prioritise the best possible noise cancelling and a more refined overall experience, or if you catch it on promotion.
Either way, the XM6 remains what Sony’s flagship earbuds have always aimed to be: a portable quiet room you can carry in your pocket.
