Oppo Find X8 Pro Review: A Pro Device That’s Ultra.

Oppo Find X8 Pro

The Oppo Find X8 Pro arrives with a competitive price and the specs of a flagship, ready to take on the big guns in the industry.

Part of a growing roster for 2024, this isn’t merely a follow-up to last year’s X7 Ultra too. From a reimagined camera system to new battery tech, the X8 Pro stakes its claim in the premium smartphone arena.

But is it truly “Pro,” or just holding the fort until an Ultra arrives?

cameras that command attention.

The Find X8 Pro doesn’t carry the X7 Ultra’s mammoth 1-inch main camera sensor, opting instead for a respectable 1/1.4-inch one. Yet, it more than compensates by adding not one, but two telephoto cameras.

One of them even employs a dual-prism design, keeping the bump modest while delivering impressive optical zoom. Add in the macro-friendly telephoto and you’ve got a system that straddles versatility and performance.

And yes, there’s a dedicated camera button; Oppo’s take on Apple’s trend-setting move. Except, in Oppo fashion, it’s pressure-sensitive and delightfully haptic, making every press feel intentional, almost playful. It’s a thoughtful touch for those who love to snap.

Main Camera

The main camera delivers crisp, detailed shots with excellent dynamic range, while the 3x telephoto offers flattering portraits.

Ultrawide Camera

The ultrawide handles landscapes with aplomb, though its smaller sensor shows its limits in low light.

Surprisingly, the 6x telephoto shines for closeups but struggles with haze in bright light.

However, the “higher resolution” 50MP photo mode did not garner noticeable gains. They are marginally better, sure, but you’ll have to pixel-peep in order to see some differences. Sticking to the regular photo mode is your best bet.

For video, the X8 Pro impresses with 4K60 recording across all cameras. Stabilization is rock-solid, making it ideal for capturing everything from family moments to cinematic clips.

battery that outlasts the day.

Battery tech is where the Oppo X8 Pro flexes hard. Sporting a 5,910mAh silicon carbon battery, it’s built to thrive in challenging conditions. The IP69 rating is your headliner; this phone laughs in the face of water jets up to 80°C. Not that we recommend testing it, but it’s nice to know it can take a hit.

In our testing, the battery easily handled a day’s worth of heavy usage. Charging times, though, are a mixed bag. The included 80W charger gets you from empty to full in about 50 minutes; not blazing fast by 2023 standards but a worthy trade-off for the battery’s increased energy density.

design that turns heads (and fingers).

Visually, the Oppo X8 Pro carries the Oppo family’s design DNA, complete with a prominent camera island. Despite Oppo’s claims of slimming it down, it’s still eye-catching, if not a bit divisive.

The Gorilla Glass 7i back and gently curved edges make it a joy to hold, though, while the aluminium frame adds a premium touch.

But it’s not all aesthetics. The Armor Shield concept blends rugged materials with shock-absorption zones, ensuring the X8 Pro is as tough as it is good-looking. Plus, there’s an alert slider (a subtle nod to OnePlus fans) that is perfect for fidgeting or switching to silent mode on the fly.

The 6.78-inch LTPO OLED display offers deep blacks, vibrant colours, and a silky 120Hz refresh rate. It’s HDR-ready, supporting Dolby Vision and HDR10+, with brightness peaks that reach an impressive 4,500 nits in HDR.

power under the hood.

The Oppo X8 Pro trades Qualcomm’s Snapdragon for MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 chip. Benchmarks show performance gains over last year’s Dimensity, and real-world use feels snappy, whether gaming or multitasking.

Paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage, it’s fast in handling a myriad of tasks. Although, heavy usage does garner some noticeable heat, with the phone getting a touch warm in the hands.

there are of course some flaws.

The optical fingerprint scanner feels dated compared to ultrasonic alternatives, and selfie enthusiasts may find the fixed-focus front camera limiting.

Charging times, while reasonable, aren’t breaking any records. And despite its solid camera performance, the looming specter of a potential Ultra variant down the line leaves you wondering what more could be.

almost Ultra, but fully Pro.

The Oppo Find X8 Pro strikes a near-perfect balance between flagship features and practicality. It’s a phone that feels substantial in your hand and holds its own in almost every category, from battery life to camera capabilities.

While it may not dethrone the Ultra in Oppo’s lineup, it sets a high bar for what a Pro device can and should be.

For those who value versatility and craftsmanship, the X8 Pro is an easy recommendation. And for the Ultra-curious among us? This is more than enough to tide you over while waiting.
