Marina Square Channels Singapore’s Playground Past for SG60

Marina Square June 2025

This June, Marina Square is leaning into Singapore nostalgia with a jubilant bounce.

There’s something profoundly comforting about the past. A sepia-toned familiarity that smells faintly of curry puffs, feels like mosaic-tiled concrete under bare feet, and sounds like the rattle of a tin can in a game of Five Stones.

As Singapore gears up to celebrate SG60, Marina Square is inviting both wide-eyed children and wistful adults to revisit the golden age of playgrounds.

A Playful Portal to Yesteryear

Walk into Marina Square’s central atrium this June, and you’ll be greeted by a sprawling playground universe built with air and imagination.

Taking centre stage is a towering, bouncy rendition of the Dragon Slide, a homage to the late Khor Ean Ghee’s 1979 masterpiece. If you grew up in Toa Payoh or remember skidding down the terrazzo dragon’s tail in your Bata slippers, this modern tribute might just tug at your heartstrings.

Flanking it are two equally whimsical companions. The Pelican Maze, shaped like its avian namesake, offers a wobbly adventure through a tropical labyrinth. And then there’s the Elephant Playground, an oversized inflatable that brings to life the beloved mosaic pachyderm of the ’70s and ’80s.

Entry to these nostalgic wonders doesn’t break the bank either. At just $6 for a 30-minute session, it’s a pocket-friendly ticket to relive the magic. The catch? It’s only available to Marina Square Rewards Members, and passes are limited to just 2,500.

Don’t fret if you’re not one yet; membership is free and takes less time to register than your child takes to lose a sock.

Old-School Games, Timeless Smiles

If you think your coordination has dulled with age, try playing Chapteh after three decades. Alongside it, there’ll be Five Stones, Pick-up Sticks, and Spinning Top, classics that once ruled void decks and school canteens before mobile screens took over.

Here, the aim is simple: reconnect. Not to WiFi, but to each other. Watch parents fumble, children giggle, and grandparents explain long-forgotten rules like seasoned referees. It’s chaos, but the kind that warms the soul.

SG60 Through the Eyes of Young Artists

Art, like nostalgia, is best enjoyed with hands dirty and hearts full. On 21 June, Marina Square partners with Faber-Castell for a Soft Pastel Workshop that promises just that. For $35, participants will receive a full starter kit and be guided through the delicate art of pastel drawing, creating SG60-themed pieces using only their fingers and imagination.

No prior experience needed, just a willingness to get smudged and surprised. It’s open to all ages, though little ones under 7 will need a trusty adult sidekick. To join, simply head to the Customer Service Counter and sign up.

Sessions: 2.30pm–4.00pm & 4.30pm–6.00pm

A Bonus Treat for Your Wallet

Of course, no mall event would be complete without a shopping perk. And Marina Square isn’t holding back. Spend just $60 in up to three same-day receipts, and Rewards Members can redeem a $5 eVoucher, while stocks last.

So if your idea of a good time includes inflatable elephants, pastel smudges on your fingertips, or watching your child discover the simple thrill of Five Stones, this is where you’ll want to be.
