Insta360 launches Luna Ultra, its first Leica co-engineered gimbal camera for mobile filmmakers

Insta360 Luna

Insta360 has launched the Luna Ultra, a new flagship gimbal camera developed in partnership with Leica and aimed at creators who want higher-end imaging in a compact, stabilised form.

Positioned as a device for next-generation mobile filmmaking, the Luna Ultra combines a dual-lens camera system, three-axis stabilisation, AI-assisted shooting tools and a detachable touchscreen in a body designed for travel and everyday use.

The Luna Ultra is an attempt to bridge two increasingly overlapping categories: the dedicated camera and the mobile creator tool. It is built for users who want something more capable than a smartphone, but less cumbersome than a larger interchangeable-lens setup.

The Luna Ultra uses a Leica Summicron lens paired with a 1-inch 8K sensor for high-resolution video and photo capture, alongside a secondary telephoto lens system built around a 1/1.3-inch sensor with an F2.0 aperture.

Insta360 says this enables natural background blur across five focal lengths, with zoom reaching up to 12 times, including six times lossless zoom.

Video capabilities are similarly ambitious on paper. The Luna Ultra supports 8K recording at 30 frames per second, Dolby Vision and 10-bit I-Log capture, giving users more flexibility in post-production. Insta360 says the system also offers up to 14 stops of dynamic range, which should help retain detail across both highlights and shadows.

On the photography side, the device supports 37-megapixel UltraPhotos and 200-megapixel Scenic Panorama images.

Low-light shooting has not been overlooked either. Insta360 says its PureVideo mode improves brightness, reduces noise and enhances detail at up to 4K60fps, while a Triple AI Chip is used to support image processing and the overall responsiveness of the system.

In physical terms, the Luna Ultra is designed to remain easy to carry. Weighing just over 200g, it sits much closer to the size and convenience of a modern mobile device than a conventional compact camera.

One of the more distinctive hardware features is its detachable two-inch OLED touchscreen, which can be used for remote monitoring and control with HD transmission up to 20 metres away. That should make solo shooting, off-angle framing and remote control notably easier.

Battery life is rated at up to four hours from a 1550mAh battery, with fast charging bringing it to 80 per cent in roughly 23 minutes. The camera also offers 47GB of usable built-in storage and supports microSD expansion of up to 1TB.

Stabilisation remains central to the product’s identity. Insta360 combines a three-axis mechanical stabilisation system with electronic image stabilisation, while Deep Track 5.0 handles subject tracking.

Features here include Auto Tracking, Active Zoom Tracking, Group Tracking and Smart Framing, all aimed at keeping subjects centred and in focus without constant manual correction.

For creators who want more control over the final image, Luna Ultra includes Leica colour profiles such as Leica Natural, Leica Vivid and Leica Chrome, alongside a selection of cinematic filters.

It also supports professional colour workflows including ACES, which gives it some relevance beyond casual social content. Built-in timecode allows synchronisation across multiple cameras and smoother work inside editing software such as Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro.

The wider workflow story also matters. Insta360 says the device supports QR Color Share for transferring colour settings between devices, while the Insta360 app uses AI-assisted editing to identify highlights and assemble ready-to-share edits.

Audio support includes a built-in wind guard and direct compatibility with Insta360 microphone systems in both single and dual-transmitter configurations.

The Luna Ultra also represents a further step in Insta360’s long-running collaboration with Leica. According to the company, the partnership now spans six years and five co-developed products.

Insta360 says the Luna Ultra is now available through its own online store, Shopee, Lazada and selected retailers, with availability in some markets to follow later.

In Singapore, pricing starts at S$969, and the device will be offered in Cosmic Black and Stellar White.
