Content creator, photographer, videographer, or someone who just wants quality memories? You’ve come to the right place. The Canon EOS R50 V is easy, light-weight, and produces beautiful photos and videos.
Now actual photographers and videographers – yes, Canon sent a media loan to someone who knows nothing about cameras. Call me biased, but I think it was an excellent choice. As a mobile phone content creator, my knowledge of the technical side of videography and photography begins and ends with switching from 1080p to 4k on the top right hand corner of my iPhone 14 Pro Max. And even the phone model wasn’t a choice made by me (thanks, tech bros!).
That being said, I had a blast creating quality videos and photos with the Canon EOS R50 V on my trip to Seoul, Korea.
P.S. Every photo that’s about to follow is unedited, so you can get a sense of the R50 V’s true capabilities.
1. Easy enough for literally anyone

When you’re someone who only just recently found out that ISO is not pronounced aye-ess-oh but aye-so, ease of use is everything. I didn’t need a manual, a YouTube tutorial, or divine intervention. The Canon EOS R50 V just made sense. From the moment I turned it on, it felt intuitive. There were no overcomplicated menus, no weird button labyrinths. It was simply point, shoot, and smile at how professional the photos somehow looked. Thank goodness for a capable ‘Auto’ mode!
(Judging based only on the “woah, this was in Auto?” responses I got while speaking to camera-aficianados about the R50 V, I’ve come to understand that a powerful ‘Auto’ mode is apparently a good test of a camera’s capabilities. I’m inclined to believe them. These photos are the nicest photos I’ve ever snapped.)
2. Girly-pop hands full, no problem

The myth that girls can hold five things in one hand? Completely true. While my models (friends) strutted their stuff up a palace staircase in Seoul, I was juggling a tote bag, a water bottle, someone’s cardigan, and the R50 V — all in one hand. The other hand? Snapping photos. “Stand over there!” became less of a command and more of a hopeful suggestion for my crew, and only because every shot from the R50 V still came out sharp, bright, and beautiful. I didn’t adjust a thing. I just set it on Auto and let the camera work.

Because of the R50 V’s handgrip and controls, I could zoom, adjust “lighting” (ISO? Aperture? One of them.) and switch between video and photo mode all with one hand. Plus, it’s light enough for someone who doesn’t like carrying heavy things. Truly everybody-friendly.
3. Light enough to bring everywhere

Speaking of its weight, this was the biggest surprise! The R50 V’s for all intents and purposes, a proper camera – but it’s light enough to toss into my bag without feeling like I’d packed a dumbbell. It never felt bulky even while walking around Seoul for hours, and that’s saying a lot when you’re also carrying jackets, portable chargers, and a water bottle.
4. Selfies are old-school, but still so cool with the R50 V

Look, I’m not saying I planned to use a legit camera for mere selfies, but when the display flips to face you, how could you not? The swivel screen made it easy to frame, pose, and check if my high-quality pimple was going to be a problem (it wasn’t, I still really like the photo).
Perhaps the only issue I had with its selfie capabilities was that my arms are too short. A lot of the selfies were too close to our faces for my liking. The bright side? They made for some great “filmcorder-esque” shots that gave off the kind of candid, Y2K-documentary energy I wanted in my videos.
5. On-the-go editing made easy with Bluetooth

If I had to describe my creative style in one word, it would be impatient. Personally, I enjoy reviewing, editing, and posting my photos and videos while I’m on-the-go. I don’t wait for the hotel, or even for the lunch table. The thrill of having an idea come to mind is a high I ride on everywhere I go, and it was no different in Seoul.
So when I discovered the R50 V’s bluetooth function, I was ecstatic. You can view me toggling with it here.
So, would I purchase the Canon EOS R50 V?

By the end of the trip, I realised something: the Canon EOS R50 V isn’t just for people who know cameras. It’s for people who love capturing moments without needing a degree in the technicalities. If that’s you, this camera might just be your next travel BFF. It certainly is now mine.
