With meaningful upgrades to performance, camera software, and sustainability, the Google Pixel 9a offers a well-rounded Android experience at a price point that feels increasingly rare.
The mid-range smartphone segment is often where practicality meets compromise. But every so often, a device comes along that manages to elevate the essentials without chasing after gimmicks. That’s where the new Google Pixel 9a shines.
Retailing at S$799 for the 128GB variant (or S$939 for 256GB), the Pixel 9a sits comfortably in the space between value and refinement, bringing Google’s best-in-class software experience and AI-powered photography into more accessible territory.
Design and Build.

There’s a certain quiet elegance to the Pixel 9a, with its matte back (made from 81% recycled plastic) and recycled aluminium frame lending both a sense of tactility and environmental mindfulness.
At 8.9mm thick and weighing around 190g, it feels compact without being cramped, and its IP68 rating offers protection against the occasional accidental drop into water or sudden downpour.
Display and User Experience.

The 6.3-inch Actua OLED display offers a 120Hz refresh rate and peaks at an impressive 2,700 nits of brightness. That’s brighter than many flagships and ensures visibility even under Singapore’s midday sun.

While the bezels are slightly thicker than what you might find on higher-end models, the overall experience is fluid and responsive, thanks in large part to the combination of high refresh rate and Google’s excellent software optimisation.
It’s a screen that doesn’t shout for attention but performs admirably where it counts.
Performance and Software.

At the heart of the Pixel 9a lies the Google Tensor G4 chipset, paired with 8GB of RAM. It’s not benchmark-breaking silicon, but real-world performance is swift and consistent. Multitasking, navigating across apps, and running productivity tools felt seamless during testing.
Where the Pixel 9a truly distinguishes itself is software. Running Android 15 out of the box, it promises seven years of OS and security updates, far outpacing many competitors. This long-term support reinforces Google’s commitment to longevity, and for users, it’s a rare peace of mind in a space often driven by annual upgrade cycles.
Google’s suite of exclusive features (Circle to Search, Call Screen, and Now Playing) are polished and genuinely useful, further enhancing the user experience without overwhelming it.
Cameras.

Despite housing only a 48MP main sensor and a 13MP ultrawide, the Pixel 9a once again demonstrates that software can outshine hardware. Thanks to Google’s computational photography engine, images are consistently well-exposed, colour-accurate, and rich in detail.

Features like Best Take, Magic Editor, and Photo Unblur deliver tangible improvements in day-to-day shooting, while Night Sight and Astrophotography modes continue to impress in low-light conditions. The results, even from the front-facing 13MP selfie camera, are sharp and balanced.
This is a phone that prioritises consistency over hardware gimmicks, and it shows.
Battery and Charging.

Battery life is solid across the board. The 5,100mAh cell delivers around 30 hours of typical use, while Extreme Battery Saver can stretch that to over 100 hours. These figures are bolstered by intelligent battery learning that adapts to your usage patterns over time.
Charging is handled via USB-C with wired fast charging (though not quite class-leading at 18W), and there’s support for Qi wireless charging, a notable inclusion at this price point. It’s not blazing fast, but it’s reliable, and more importantly, safe for long-term battery health.
Security and Extras.

Security is handled by the Titan M2 security chip, ensuring encrypted storage and system integrity. Google also includes built-in VPN support, Car Crash Detection, and Emergency SOS, rounding out a comprehensive suite of safety features.
These are typically reserved for more expensive handsets, making their inclusion here all the more welcome.
Smart, Sustainable, and Surprisingly Polished.

With thoughtful design, dependable performance, and intelligent camera features, it delivers one of the most cohesive Android experiences you’ll find under S$800.
It’s not perfect. Charging speeds could be quicker, and the lack of a telephoto lens may limit creative flexibility. But these are small trade-offs for what is otherwise a highly refined package.
If you’re looking for a reliable smartphone with smart software, excellent long-term support, and a touch of Google’s trademark AI magic, the Pixel 9a is one of the best-value choices on the market today.
