WWF-Singapore’s (World Wide Fund for Nature Singapore) inaugural, in-person WWF Earth Hour Summit kicked off today at Marina Bay Sands.
The WWF Earth Hour Summit 2023 brings together a conglomerate of CEOs, thought leaders and decision-makers from the private and public sectors to discuss important green transition opportunities and how the general public can take practical action to address the pressing issue of climate change.
This summit follows in the footsteps of the nation’s recent commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and to reduce emissions to 60 MtCO2e (Metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent) in 2030.
Minister for Sustainability and Environment Grace Fu will deliver a virtual address highlighting the key role of businesses in addressing climate change. The address includes topics such as accelerating decarbonisation, investing in innovation and driving collaboration within and across sectors. Business leaders in attendance will also be urged to commit to sustainable actions, such as setting air-conditioners in all offices at 25 degrees Celsius.
“The WWF Earth Hour Summit 2023 is the culmination of the work that we have done over the years in promoting collective action on climate. We know the road to Net Zero cannot be paved alone and will require the participation of multiple stakeholders. We want to encourage a robust exchange of ideas, as well as shed light on practical examples that the industry can adopt,” said WWF-Singapore’s CEO, Mr R. Raghunathan.
“For the last 12 years, Marina Bay Sands has been partnering with WWF for several key initiatives such as the annual Earth Hour movement and responsible seafood procurement. We are excited to support them for the inaugural Earth Hour Summit, providing the platform for thought leaders and decision-makers to gather and deepen conversations around climate-related challenges as well as identify ways to achieve our collective goals,” said Meridith Beaujean, Executive Director of Sustainability, Marina Bay Sands.
“Singapore International Chamber of Commerce is proud to support this inaugural Summit. It underscores that taking action to mitigate existential climate risks is everyone’s responsibility. That means every business has to move from awareness to action and collaborate with others to find innovative solutions, which can be implemented at scale,” said the Chief Executive of the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce, Victor Mills.
The WWF Earth Hour Summit 2023 is expected to draw more than 500 participants from over 350 organisations.
So what can you expect as an attendee? Well, the summit will feature deep-dive keynote sessions on issues such as the requisite solutions needed for the private sector to tackle climate change and the role of green finance in driving capital towards nature-positive activities and meeting net-zero ambitions.
