Canon Unveils New EOS R6 Mark III and RF45mm f/1.2 STM

Canon EOS R6 Mark III

The new Canon EOS R6 Mark III and RF45mm f/1.2 STM arrive as a kind of “enthusiast’s pro kit”, packed with serious imaging muscle but designed for the photographer who still wants to travel light, shoot fast, and not take out a second mortgage in the process.

Canon has slotted the EOS R6 Mark III into that sweet spot between advanced hobbyist and working professional. Succeeding the EOS R6 Mark II from 2023, it brings a noticeable bump in resolution to 32.5 megapixels, while keeping the speed and responsiveness that made its predecessor so popular.

The RF45mm f/1.2 STM, meanwhile, is a new large-aperture standard prime. Canon’s first non-L f/1.2 lens in the RF line-up, and very deliberately positioned to make f/1.2 look far more accessible.

“At Canon Singapore, we are committed to providing individuals with tools that inspire creativity and passion. The EOS R6 Mark III, combined with the uniquely positioned RF45mm f/1.2 STM delivers a holistic, high-performance imaging package that redefines what creators can achieve. We are advancing imaging technology while making professional-grade performance more accessible to enthusiasts and creators.”

EOS R6 Mark III – More Detail, Same Relentless Speed

The EOS R6 Mark III’s full-frame CMOS sensor now offers approximately 32.5 megapixels, giving you finer detail and more room to crop.

Despite the higher processing load, you still get up to 40 fps with the electronic shutter and up to 12 fps with the mechanical or electronic first-curtain shutter. In high-speed mode, the camera can fire off roughly 150 shots in a burst at 40 fps.

One of the more thoughtful features in the EOS R6 Mark III is the pre-continuous shooting function; the camera starts capturing up to 20 frames before you fully press the shutter button. This pre-shooting works with any still image format (RAW, C-RAW or HEIF) and in any AF mode.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II is backed by new algorithms that cling to tricky subjects more reliably, which in turn simplifies your workflow later. The EOS R6 Mark III also inherits the Register People Priority function from the flagship EOS R1. Pre-register faces, and the camera will prioritise those people in group shots, events or concerts for both stills and video.

While the R6 line has always flirted with hybrid shooting, the Mark III goes much deeper into serious video territory. It supports 7K 60p internal RAW recording to a CFexpress Type B card, as well as 3:2 Open Gate recording up to 7K 30p RAW. For creators producing both horizontal and vertical content from the same footage, you now have access to Open Gate.

Recording options have expanded to include internal RAW, Canon Log 2, and HLG gamma, alongside Canon Log 3 and HDR PQ.

Like the EOS R5 Mark II, the EOS R6 Mark III includes a waveform monitor, false colours and zebras for precise on-set exposure checking. New AWB Response and Shockless WB functions ensure smooth white balance transitions during video, whether you rely on Auto White Balance or manually tweak it mid-shot. For creators who like to experiment in-camera, there are 14 colour filters for instant grading effects on stills or video, plus a dedicated S&F (Slow & Fast) mode that records up to 60x fast-motion 4K or up to 5x (4K) / 7.5x (2K DCI) slow-motion footage.

For those who live in the weeds of spec sheets, the R6 Mark III offers a native ISO range of 100–64,000 for stills (expandable from ISO 50 to 102,400), and a range of ISO options for video depending on the chosen gamma curve (Canon Log 2/3, Canon 709, PQ, HLG and others).

Mechanical and first-curtain shutter speeds run from 30 seconds to 1/8,000s, while the electronic shutter extends that upper limit to 1/16,000s. Maximum recording time for standard (non-high-frame-rate) movies is approximately six hours, assuming thermal limits and card capacity allow.

RF45mm f/1.2 STM – Fast Glass Made Friendly

It is Canon’s first f/1.2 lens in this “non-professional” class. At 45mm on full frame, it sits in that natural, slightly wide standard focal range.

On APS-C bodies like the EOS R50, the lens delivers a 72mm full-frame equivalent field of view, which is very flattering for portraits and detail shots. At f/1.2, you get generous background blur and more latitude to shoot in low-light situations without cranking ISO to grainy extremes. Stop the lens down to f/8 and it delivers professional-grade edge-to-edge sharpness – so you are not sacrificing crispness for character.

Weighing around 346 g and measuring approximately 78.0 mm by 75.0 mm, it is the smallest f/1.2 lens across both the EF and RF line-ups, made possible by the use of PMo (plastic moulded) aspherical elements, a gear-type STM with magnetic detection, and digital lens correction.
