Leica MONOPAN 50 Brings the Soul Back to 35mm

Leica MONOPAN 50

The Leica MONOPAN 50 is a love letter back to the golden age of black-and-white film.

Ask any seasoned photographer what black-and-white film smells like, and chances are, they’ll smile before giving you an answer. It smells like darkroom chemicals, like stories waiting to be told, like the ghosts of light caught in silver halide. And now, as Leica celebrates 100 years since the original Leica I debuted in 1925, they’re adding a new scent to that memory with the MONOPAN 50.

When Oskar Barnack dreamt up the Leica I, he was enlarging the scope of storytelling. “Small negative – big picture,” he said. And with the new MONOPAN 50, that vision breathes once more, in 36 carefully crafted frames.

What exactly is MONOPAN 50?

“Mono” harks back to Leica’s beloved Monochrom digital range. “Pan” is short for panchromatic, referring to the film’s sensitivity to the full visible spectrum (and then some), and “50” is your ISO speed. Slow by today’s standards, but oh so sweet for creamy tonal transitions and tack-sharp detail.

How sharp? Try 280 line pairs per millimetre. MONOPAN 50 is fine art in a 35mm cartridge. It’s also no stranger to drama, thanks to superpanchromatic sensitivity that stretches to 780nm, making it an ideal companion for infrared experiments. If you’ve ever wanted to pair your Leica glass with some moody B&W infrared filters, this is your moment.

This film was practically made for your Summilux-M, Noctilux-M and Summicron-M lenses. With ISO 50, you can open up those wide apertures even in bright light, letting that signature Leica bokeh swirl and dance while still keeping your highlights in check. And in an age when everyone’s shooting at f/2.8 and calling it cinematic, isn’t it time we reminded ourselves what a real wide-open frame looks like?

The packaging alone tugs on nostalgia’s heartstrings, styled like a vintage tin you might find in a dusty camera bag from the ’50s. It’s compatible with all standard black-and-white developers, and sings particularly well in landscape, architecture, and travel photography.

The Leica MONOPAN 50 will be available from 21 August 2025, retailing at S$20 per roll. Not bad for a piece of history. And if that doesn’t make you want to load up a camera and go shoot, I don’t know what will.
