The Amerigo Vespucci, often dubbed the “most beautiful ship in the world,” is making its historic first visit to Singapore this October.
For those unfamiliar, the Amerigo Vespucci is an emblem of Italy’s rich maritime tradition and a proud ambassador of the country’s culture.
From October 24 to 28, 2024, Singapore will play host to this navy training ship, offering locals and visitors a chance to get up close and personal.
This is also part of the ship’s celebrated world tour, bringing Italy’s cultural and culinary offerings straight to our shores.
Stepping on board is like taking a trip back in time. Built in 1931, the ship is nearly a century old, yet it continues to serve as a training ground for Italy’s naval cadets.
On the Singaporean leg of its tour, the Vespucci will also be joined by the “Villaggio Italia”, a multi-sensory, multi-day exhibition showcasing Italy’s art, culture, music, food, cinema, technology, and scientific achievements.
The opening ceremony on October 24 will have Italian dignitaries flying in for the occasion. Expect appearances from the Deputy Minister of Enterprise, the Italian Ambassador to Singapore, and even the Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy.
For the music lovers, the Villaggio Italia will feature a line-up of daily performances by the Fanfare of the Livorno Naval Academy. From opera classics like Puccini to modern Italian pop, the concerts are bound to be one of the event’s highlights.
For the cinephiles among us, the Villaggio Italia is also hosting a series of Italian film screenings, carefully curated by the Venice Biennale’s International Film Festival. This is your chance to catch world-class Italian cinema.
But let’s not forget the food. Italy is renowned for its culinary excellence, and visitors will get to taste traditional Italian dishes at the Italy Restaurant and enjoy wine from the UNESCO-listed Piedmont region.
The Villaggio Italia will also host a series of conferences on topics like sustainability, scientific research, and entrepreneurship.
Whether you’re interested in history, art, music, film, or food, there’s something for everyone at this event. And the best part? Admission is free.
Just make sure you book your slots online.
