Canon Launches New RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM Lens.

Canon has unveiled the RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM, a new RF mount lens designed for the EOS R mirrorless camera system.

It’s Canon’s first non-professional-grade lens to offer a bright f/2.8 constant aperture, making high-quality, versatile zoom photography more accessible to a broader audience.

“We are excited to introduce the Canon RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM, a portable lens equipped with a popular focal range and highly desired fixed aperture of f/2.8. It is our belief that the RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM will be warmly welcomed by all photographers and content creators in bringing their imagination to life,” said David Yeo, Senior Marketing Manager of Consumer Business, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore.

Zoom lenses with a constant aperture are often seen as the Swiss Army knives of the photography world, and the RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM offers that versatility in spades.

With a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture, this lens performs well in low-light settings while giving you that sought-after shallow depth-of-field effect, perfect for making your subjects pop.

For those using APS-C cameras, the lens transforms into an effective focal range of 44.8mm to 112mm, making it a fantastic go-to for everyday scenes.

Canon has equipped this lens with a powerful Optical Image Stabilizer, which provides a significant edge when shooting handheld. On cameras without In-Body Image Stabilizer (like the EOS R8), you get up to 5.5 stops of shake reduction. On models that do have it, like the EOS R6 Mark II, that stabilisation improves to a whopping 7.5 stops.

Despite its impressive aperture, the RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM measures just over 9cm long when fully retracted and weighs a manageable 495g. That’s 45% lighter than Canon’s professional-grade RF24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM lens.

Though it’s not part of Canon’s L-series (typically reserved for their top-tier glass), the RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM still boasts weather-sealing, durability, and shock resistance.

The Canon RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM is slated for release in late September 2024 at Canon authorised dealers. Pricing details will be shared closer to the launch date.
