Apple WWDC 2024 Summarised.

The latest Apple WWDC keynote teases a host of new software updates that are coming really soon.

It’s that time of the year again – Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2024 has kicked off.

We all know Tim Cook, but Senior VP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi stole the show with his amiable style and parkour moves (seriously, watch the keynote video).

Here are the biggest takeaways from Apple WWDC 2024.

Apple Intelligence.

After a long silence on AI, Apple has finally unveiled its proprietary AI – Apple Intelligence. This powerful tool works seamlessly across all Apple devices.

Imagine having your emails summarised or the tone adjusted to reflect your intent. Need a transcript summary of a live phone call or recording? Apple Intelligence has you covered.

Tired of the same old emojis? Enter Genmoji. Describe what you want, and Apple Intelligence will create a customised emoji.

For those needing more, the Image Playground feature lets you type in a description and select a style (animation, illustration, or sketch) to generate an image. You can even enhance sketches or ideas with the Image Wand.

And Siri is getting the upgrade it deserves. With a deeper understanding of personal context, Siri can provide more personalised responses. Ask for directions, and Siri will consider your travel history and the weather to suggest the best route.

Siri’s improved language understanding means it can handle verbal corrections and backtracking, making it smarter and more intuitive.

Apple TV+.

Apple TV+ is getting smarter with inSights, a feature that identifies actors and music in scenes.

Exclusively available for Apple TV+ original programming, it’s perfect for those moments when you’re wondering, “Who is that actor?” or “What’s that song?”

macOS Sequoia.

The new macOS Sequoia introduces the Continuity app, allowing seamless iPhone mirroring on your Mac – a handy feature for multitaskers.

iPadOS 18.

iPadOS 18 brings the Calculator app with Math Notes. Write out an equation with your Apple Pencil, and it calculates instantly. Change a number, and the total adjusts automatically.

Plus, the Smart Script feature refines your handwritten notes, erasing words with a simple scratch-out gesture.

VisionOS 2.

Apple’s Vision Pro gets a significant update with VisionOS 2. Using machine learning, it transforms 2D photos by adding depth, creating lifelike spatial photos. Expanded intuitive gestures and an ultrawide virtual display enhance your user experience.

Here’s the big news – the Vision Pro will be available in Singapore from 28 June.

iOS 18.

Personalising your home screen just got a whole lot cooler with dark mode and colour filters.

The Photos app is getting smarter. You’ll now have a filter to automatically remove screenshots and new sections like Trips, which will collate your travel photos.

And for those who love reminiscing, there’s a section for your best pictures. Plus, iOS 18 will have a dark mode for the home screen and a revamped Control Center to better manage your music and apps.

Apple has also introduced the ability to schedule text messages. No more missing birthday texts! With iOS 18, you can schedule messages to go out at the perfect time. And the new text formatting options (bold, italic, strikethrough) add a nice touch.

Apple’s new Passwords app for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia is set to rival services like LastPass. This built-in app will manage all your credentials, expanding on the iCloud Keychain tool many of us already use.

Safari is getting smarter with an AI-powered feature called Highlights, which will summarise webpages and articles. Reading about a TV show? Safari will now show you more info about it via AI, making browsing more intuitive.

Apple Maps isn’t left out too, and is adding topographic maps. These maps will show changes in elevation and trail networks, making them perfect for weekend warriors looking to explore the great outdoors.

WatchOS 11.

The new vitals monitoring tool will track your heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, and sleep. There are also updates to workout tracking, including a tool that rates the intensity of your workouts to help you find the perfect balance.

AirPods.

Apple introduced a new feature for AirPods that lets you answer calls with just a nod or ignore them with a quick shake of your head.

AirPods Pro will get the addition of voice isolation, ensuring your voice cuts through the noise. Whether you’re in a bustling cafe or walking down a busy street, your voice will come through crystal clear, making conversations a breeze even in the noisiest environments.
